Safe, Beautiful Staircase Railings Installed Right

stairrailing installation

Your staircase is one of the most visible architectural features in any building. We install stair railings that combine structural integrity, code compliance, and striking design to make your staircase a centerpiece.

Expert Stair Railing Installation Across Northern Utah

Stair railings serve a critical safety function while also defining the visual character of your staircase. At Brooms Railing, we understand that installing a stair railing is fundamentally different from a straight guardrail — it requires precise angle calculations, plumb baluster alignment on sloped surfaces, transition fittings where stairs meet landings, and handrail profiles that are comfortable and graspable. We bring this specialized expertise to every staircase project in Northern Utah.

Our mission is to help ensure the safety of each person who walks your stairs. Falls on staircases are among the most common household injuries, and a properly installed railing is your first line of defense. We install railings that people instinctively reach for — handrails at the right height, with a comfortable profile, anchored solidly so they never wobble or give under load.

From a simple single-story stair rail in a Kaysville home to a grand multi-story staircase in a Bountiful custom build, we handle projects of every scale. Our experience includes straight-run staircases, L-shaped switchbacks, curved and helical stairs, and even spiral staircases. Each configuration demands specific engineering and fabrication techniques that we have refined over years of dedicated railing work.

We offer stair railings in three core materials — powder-coated aluminum for lightweight durability and slim modern profiles, steel for heavy-duty rigidity on grand or commercial staircases, and vinyl for clean, low-maintenance finishes in transitional indoor spaces. Stainless steel hardware is used throughout for long-term reliability. Every system is installed with structural post connections into stair stringers and framing, not surface-mounted shortcuts that compromise strength.

Stair Railing Configurations We Install

Our expert contractors specialize in all types of stair railing installation projects.

Straight-Run Stair Railings

The most common staircase configuration, straight-run railings follow a single uninterrupted flight of stairs. We install wall-mounted handrails, open-side guardrails, or both, with proper starting newels and termination fittings.

  • Single-flight rail with consistent pitch angle
  • Wall-mounted, open-side, or dual-rail configurations
  • Starting newels and turnout fittings for a finished look
  • Post-to-post or continuous handrail systems
  • Available in aluminum, steel, or vinyl with finish options to match

Switchback & L-Shaped Stair Railings

Multi-flight staircases with intermediate landings require careful transition engineering where the angled rail meets the level landing rail. We fabricate gooseneck and over-easing fittings for seamless directional changes.

  • Smooth transitions between angled and level rail sections
  • Gooseneck fittings for 180-degree switchbacks
  • Landing newel posts anchored into platform framing
  • Continuous handrail option for uninterrupted grip
  • Consistent design language across all flights

Curved & Helical Stair Railings

Curved staircases demand railings that follow a precise radius and maintain consistent height as the stair spirals. We fabricate curved rail sections using bending forms matched to your staircase geometry.

  • Rail sections bent to match your staircase radius
  • Consistent handrail height throughout the curve
  • Custom-angled balusters following the spiral path
  • Aluminum and steel bending capabilities
  • Showpiece craftsmanship for grand staircases

Open Staircase Railings

Open or floating staircases with no walls on one or both sides require guardrail systems that provide full fall protection while maintaining the dramatic open aesthetic. We design railings with slim-profile aluminum or steel pickets that enhance the floating effect.

  • Slim-profile aluminum pickets for an airy, lightweight appearance
  • Powder-coated steel for a sharper visual presence on grand stairs
  • Code-compliant baluster spacing throughout
  • Structural post engineering for unsupported stair edges
  • Designed to complement open-concept architecture

Our Stair Railing Installation Process

1

Staircase Assessment

We measure your staircase dimensions, pitch angle, tread depth, riser height, landing configurations, and wall positions. We photograph the space and discuss your design preferences, noting any structural considerations.

2

Design & Engineering

Using your measurements, we engineer the railing system with precise post locations, rail angles, transition fittings, and baluster layouts. We present the design with material and finish options, along with a detailed written quote.

3

Custom Fabrication

Rail sections are cut and welded to your staircase's exact angles. Transition fittings are prepared for landing connections. Aluminum and steel components receive their powder-coat finish, and vinyl components are pre-fitted and trimmed to your exact stair geometry.

4

Installation & Alignment

Posts are anchored into structural framing at calculated intervals. Rail sections are installed and aligned for consistent height above the stair nosing. Balusters are set plumb on the angled stair surface, and all joints are secured and finished.

5

Code Verification & Handoff

We verify handrail height (34-38 inches from stair nosing), baluster spacing (4-inch maximum), graspability requirements, and structural load capacity. After a final walkthrough with you, we leave your staircase safe, beautiful, and ready for use.

Common questions about staircase railing installation

Utah building code requires a handrail on at least one side of any stairway with four or more risers. If the stairway is open on one or both sides and more than 30 inches above the adjacent surface, a full guardrail (not just a handrail) is required on the open side. Commercial and multi-family buildings have additional requirements including handrails on both sides for stairs wider than 44 inches.
A handrail is the graspable rail you hold while ascending or descending stairs. It must be between 34 and 38 inches high measured vertically from the stair nosing and have a cross-section between 1.25 and 2 inches in diameter. A guardrail is the barrier system (including posts, balusters, and top rail) that prevents falls from an open side. The guardrail must be at least 36 inches high for residential applications. A guardrail often includes a handrail as its top component.
In some cases we can modify or upgrade components of an existing railing system — for example, replacing balusters while keeping the handrail and posts. However, if the existing system has structural issues, incorrect dimensions, or is significantly outdated, a full replacement is usually the better investment for safety and aesthetics. We assess your specific situation during the consultation.
We attach posts directly to the stair stringer, rim joist, or structural framing using through-bolts or heavy-duty lag screws with structural adhesive. Surface-mount brackets are used only on concrete surfaces where through-mounting is not possible, and in those cases we use expansion anchors rated for the required load. We never rely on mounting into drywall, finished treads alone, or non-structural materials.
We recommend a round or oval profile between 1.25 and 1.5 inches in diameter for the best combination of graspability and comfort. This size allows most hand sizes to wrap fully around the rail for a secure grip. We offer several shaped aluminum and steel profiles that meet code while providing a refined appearance. The key is that the profile must be continuously graspable along the full length of the stair.
Yes, we install stair railings in all locations — interior staircases, exterior entry stairs, deck stairs, porch steps, and garage stairs. Outdoor stair railings are built with weather-resistant materials rated for Northern Utah conditions, while interior stair railings are finished to complement your indoor design. The code requirements differ slightly between interior and exterior applications, and we ensure compliance in both cases.
Stair railing costs depend on the material, the number of stair flights, the complexity of the staircase (straight vs. curved vs. switchback), and the design details you select. A basic aluminum picket upgrade for a single straight flight is at the lower end, while a custom curved steel system for a multi-story staircase represents a larger investment. We provide transparent, itemized estimates so there are no surprises.
Yes, this is one of our most common projects. Many older homes in Ogden, Layton, and Bountiful have basement stairs with no railing or just a loose wall-mounted rail. We install proper wall-mounted handrails with returns, or full open-side guardrail systems, depending on your staircase configuration. This is one of the most impactful safety upgrades you can make in your home.
